I spent one whole day around this area on the 17th July 2011. I wanted to cover the Wong Wian Yai Railway station, which is the station trains leave to Samut Songkhram and the famous Train Market. This is also known as the Mae Khlong Mahachai railway. The Taksin statue is a famous landmark on a huge traffic island at Wong Wian Yai, on the border of Khlong San and Thonburi Districts. King Taksin ~ Somdet Phra Chao Krung Thon Buri; ( April 17, 1734 – April 7, 1782 ) was the only King of the Thonburi Kingdom and was of Thai Chinese descent. He was the leader in the liberation of Siam from the Burmese occupation after the Second Fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, and the subsequent unification of Siam after it fell under various warlords. He established the city Thonburi as the new capital, as the city Ayutthaya had been almost completely destroyed by invaders. His reign was characterized by numerous wars, fought to repel new Burmese invasions and to bring under control the northern Thai kingdom of Lanna, and a threatening Cambodia. He was executed and succeeded by his long time friend King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke who then created the Chakri dynasty and the Rattanakosin Kingdom. King Taksin statue was unveiled in the middle of Wongwian Yai ( the Big roundabout ) in Thonburi, at the intersection of Prajadhipok road, Inthara Phithak road, Lat Ya road, Somdet Phra Chao Taksin road. The king is portrayed with his right hand holding a sword, the statue measuring about 9 metres in height from his horse's hooves to the spire of his hat, rests on a reinforced concrete pedestal of 8.90 x 1.80 x 3.90 metres. The Wong Wian Yai roundabout is one of Bangkok's major traffic intersections, linking residential area on the Thonburi side to Bangkok downtown side through the Memorial Bridge in the north. The north-eastern road Lat Ya links to Khlong San Pier with ferry services to Si Phraya Road or the further Taksin Bridge to Sathon and Si Lom business areas. There are many markets, retail shops, department stores, cinemas, and all the places you can find accommodation for the night. Apart from fresh or cooked food stalls, the area is also famous as the largest cluster of Thai leather traders on Charoen Rat Road opposite the railway station. Nearby there is Wongwian Yai Station, a historical commuter railway terminal to Mahachai ( local name of Samut Sakon provincial city ) and Mae Khlong ( Samut Songkhram ) in the south-western suburb of Bangkok. Originally constructed as a private line to take sea produce from the fishing ports of Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram to the markets of Bangkok, it later became part of the State Railway of Thailand, though it was never actually connected to the rest of the network. Trains to Samut Sakhon run every 60 minutes or so from 05.30 until 20.10 hrs. Last train back leaves Samut Sakhon at 19.00. Phone number for Wong Wian Yai Station is 02-465-2017. Most trains have fans only, to cool people, though occasionally you find one or two air-conditioned carriages. Return trains to Bangkok tend to be quite crowded, especially in the late afternoon. The trip to Samut Sakhon takes about 55 minutes. Wong Wian Yai station is not that easy to find, the sign outside is a give away but it’s hidden by a garden. You can take the BTS to Wongwian Yai station and take a taxi, or walk to the Wong Wian Yai train station. It is a 15 minute walk. If you arrive at the BTS station from the city you need to walk in the direction away from the river on the right side of the road. After 400 metres you need to turn right in the direction of the Taksin monument. Before the square with the Taksin Monument you will see a walking bridge that crosses the road. You need to cross this bridge and go in the direction of the Taksin Monument again. After you cross the pedestrian bridge you turn right and you will find the station directly on the left side.

NOT a BTS station and not connected. Don't be confused. You can go to Mahachai for free or cheap in a very local way.

Only 10 baht to Mahachai (Samut Sakhon). Take the ferry at the Mahachai pier to get to the Ban Laem Railway station. From there you could go even further south to Mae Klong (Samut Songkhram). Don't miss the part where the train goes right through the Mae Klong market ;-)

I didn't use this train station, but there's an amazing local food market on either side of the tracks. I had the best pad thai made here, which came on a banana leaf and had egg cooked straight into it (only costing 30 baht). If you're in walking distance, it's worth a look. A true local experience!
