Assembling ingredients is fun, but does not make for a cooking class. Yes, cooking classes are a very popular tourist activity in Thailand and almost always attract rave reviews. If you like to cook, you must certainly do one or two. I think I am a serial offender! My course today with Bangkok Academy was maybe my 5th course in Thailand over several years. I feel I have the experience to judge the great courses and this course has some good and some bad points. The facilities at this cooking school are first-rate and the staff are friendly and helpful. The structure of this course is like nearly every course I have done in Thailand. Starting out with a market visit to look at fresh Thai ingredients, then cooking 3 to 4 dishes - in this case, an entire, a curry, a stir fry and basic desert. The courses end with eating your food and then you receive online access to the recipes you made. The staff are so efficient here, but maybe too much so. The bulk of the food preparation is done for you already and the ingredients laid out on trays. The only thing you need to do is just slice some vegetables and stir-fry. This makes everything so simple and would probably be great for kids, but it also means that you are blindly following instructions without learning to think like a real Thai chef. The teacher was friendly, but lacks the experience and insight of a true culinary teacher. In my opinion, there was not enough theory, cooking techniques and knowledge supplied in this course. The teacher did not help any of the students with their knife technique and several needed it. The class was managed well with multiple dishes being cooked at once. However, it's not enough just to follow instructions, if we are to learn to cook Thai at home, we also need to understand the process and to be involved in it, understand the sequence and why things are done a certain way. This whole course felt very rushed to me. It needed to be at least an hour or maybe two longer. However, this is the tourist industry! If they did that and took extra special care, they could not squeeze two courses into one day and push people out conveyor belt style.

A wonderful experience for my husband and I. We were met at the Skytrain as promised with clear directions. We walked to the market, close to the Sytrain stop to learn about the ingredients. Another 5 minute walk to the cooking class. The class was run effectively and efficiently with 14 other people there. A lot of fun to break down the ingredients and create the curries, etc. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining afternoon with a great host/team.

I booked this class for Thursday afternoon 27/07/17. I was very lucky, in that I was the only person booked in for the class that day. Usually a class of 12. So I basically had a private cooking lesson. I made the 6 different foods I had chosen from the list. My lesson lasted 2 and a half hours. With a full class it is about 4 hours I think. Go hungry as you eat you own food. It was delicious. A few tweaks will be made at home. Not so much sugar in the Massaman curry. And when you finish you get recipes. Take photos of each stage if you have a bad memory like me. The recipes are good for ingredients but not so going for method. So pay attention. I would recommend this place. You also have a walk round a market nearby before you go to the cookery school. You'll get different ingredients explained to you. You don't actually buy anything at the market.

We took the beginner's class and each cooked five dishes. Our group of 6 (four of them teenagers) thoroughly enjoyed our morning with Chef Air. He was talented, engaging, thorough, patient, and fun, inspiring our budding home cooks to whip up their favorite Thai meals. Chef Air made sure all the kids practiced kitchen safety and hygiene, and even suggested how we could make adaptations to our dishes, based on ingredients we would ordinarily find back home in California. We enjoyed learning the basic ingredients of Thai cuisine from the local market tour, the balance of flavors, and key techniques. In a very clean kitchen (air conditioned), we cooked from scratch panang, pad Thai, pad see ewe, morning glory, tom yum, cashew chicken, larb, sticky rice with mango, and bananas in coconut milk. Then we enjoyed the feast, which was absolutely delicious! My 16 year-old son said it was the best money spent, and definitely a highlight of our time in Bangkok. We will do the next level class on future trips back to Bangkok!
